Some gifts choose you — and the next quiznot has appeared on Earth. Boarding-school secrets, a telepathic blue wolf, and stakes that reach past the stars.

Book description

When fifteen-year-old Timothy Starr causes a freak accident that destroys a chemistry lab and collapses a packed grandstand, he’s sent away—to Smithson School, an elite boarding school hidden deep in New Hampshire.

Smithson is quiet. Perfect. Too perfect.

The students never break rules. The teachers watch a little too closely. And accidents keep happening around Timothy.

As Timothy struggles to understand what’s wrong with him—and with the school—he begins to uncover a truth far stranger than he imagined. Smithson isn’t just hiding secrets. It’s hiding something inhuman.

When Timothy grows close to Allie, one of the school’s most captivating students, he doesn’t realize she’s connected to a conflict far beyond Earth—or that powerful forces are searching for something called a quiznot, an entity capable of altering time, space, and fate itself.

Bonded to an unlikely companion—a telepathic blue wolf named Max—Timothy must decide who to trust before he becomes part of an experiment with consequences far beyond his control.

At Smithson School, nothing is accidental. And the truth may already be watching.

From the author

In the Quiznot series, I wanted Earth to play an immediate role in a galaxy-wide community of planets. What better way to do that than have the next quiznot appear on Earth and have other alien civilizations, interested in its power, come calling.

As the newest quiznot handler, Timothy Starr suddenly has near unlimited power, but he also controls the fate of entire planets. That’s a lot to rest on fifteen-year-old shoulders, but the perfect setup for a novelist.

What readers say

Fantastic story. Loved the writing and the characters. Couldn’t put it down… stayed up late to finish as I needed to know what would happen next.

— Kirsten P., Amazon review (2014)

When I read the book’s description, I thought “Another magic school knockoff.” Well, I was pleasantly wrong. … That last part is like a roller coaster ride of events.

— “Retired Techie,” Amazon review (2019)

I was expecting formulaic fantasy. I got twists and turns, likeable heroes and villains to dislike. A clever and well constructed story.

Readers

Perfect for fans of The 5th Wave and I Am Number Four — also a strong match if you like boarding-school tension, reluctant powers, and sci-fi that widens in scope as the story goes.
